Where Do I Obtain Windows Phone (Mobile) 6.5 For My SGH-i637
(Jack)?
Samsung has released a software upgrade for the SGH-i637 (Jack)
which is recommended to be installed. This update includes an upgrade
to Windows Phone (Mobile) 6.5 and numerous software enhancements. The update
may take between 5-10 minutes to complete if the system is already
set up.
This upgrade contains several enhancements and features. Highlights
are listed below.
- Microsoft Windows Phone (Mobile) 6.5 Standard Edition
- Windows Phone (Mobile) 6.5 includes new features such as:
- Windows Marketplace for Mobile: Discover
apps that unlock the power of your Windows Phone, shop securely
with confidence, and download instantly to your phone.
- Internet Explorer Mobile: Internet Explorer
Mobile 6 delivers the same high quality browsing and media
viewing experience that you’ve come to expect on your desktop
computer. If you can see it in Internet Explorer on your
PC, you’ll be able to see it just as well on your Windows Pphone, whether the content you want is on YouTube, a game
using Flash animation, or on a social site like Facebook
or MySpace.
- AT&T WiFi: Automatic access to
over 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots nationwide is available
on the Samsung Jack and is included in select smartphone
data plans. This allows for fast and easy downloads of your
favorite music, streaming videos, games, and more.
- Vlingo for Windows Phone: Instantly send
a text or email message, call a friend, search the Web,
open native applications and more, all by speaking into
your Samsung Jack Windows Phone.

Step One: Obtaining The SGH-i637 Upgrade Tool
|
To
obtain the Upgrade Tool, click on the download button below.
- When
you receive the File Download dialog window, select
Save
- Click
Save and save the file to a specified location, recommend
desktop for easy access.
Note:
The Upgrade Tool software must be saved locally to the PC. It not
recommended to use the "Run" option for this update.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
|
|
The
download process will erase ALL user data from the
device. Please ensure that all critical information
has been backed up before applying this update.
Any
installed programs and/or updates will need to be
re-installed after applying this update.

Step Two:
Install Microsoft Windows Device Center Or ActiveSync 4.5
|

Step Three:
Backing-up Data From The Jack To The Computer
|
- On the phone, press Start > Settings > Connections
> USB. Verify the USB connection Setting is set to ActiveSync,
then select Done (left soft key).
- Connect the phone to the USB cable and plug the other end
directly into an available USB port on the PC.
- If not previously done, create a standard partnership between
the computer and your Jack.
- Select the items you wish to backup, and then allow the
synchronization to complete.
- When synchronization is complete and the selected data has
been verified to have been successfully synchronized into Microsoft
Outlook, disconnect the USB cable from the phone and power the
phone off.

If you utilize File Encryption
on the handset, please ensure data is relocated off
the device and card to a desktop PC. Otherwise, there
is no way to recover the cipher key after the flash
thus your data can no longer be read.

Step Four:
Begin Software Update Process
|
- Please close all open programs on the computer.
- On the computer, double-click on the file Jack_Windows_Mobile_6_5_Upgrade.exe
- The Introduction screen containing a condensed list of what
is new with the upgrade.
- Click on the Next button to continue

- Please read over the license agreement and select “I accept
the terms in the license agreement”, and click Next.

- Please read over the Notices window before continuing. When
ready, select “I understand the instructions indicated above”
and click Next.

- Please follow and read over the Setup Procedures before
continuing.

- (A) The Upgrade Tool will perform a system check
to verify
necessary drivers are already installed on the computer. During the PreInstall Driver
process, two files will be copied over to the PC that are required
for flashing. The handset may briefly display “Download Mode”
before going to a black screen. This is normal. Windows may
ask you to install software with the new hardware wizard. In
this case, select automatically search and install.

The upgrade tool will install
a software driver required to update the handset.
If Windows alerts that the software is not digitally
signed or is unable to verify publisher, select
“Install the driver software anyway”. Please
see the section “Additional Troubleshooting Steps”
for further assistance.

- (B) For information purposes, the device
should be successfully detected as a Samsung MSM7xxx base HUS
Interface under ports in Device Manager. Device Manager can
be access by clicking on Start, Run, devmgmt.msc.
NOTE:
COM Port numbers may vary depending on the PC Configuration.

- Click the Start to begin the upgrade.
- The flashing process will go through several different
phases. This information will be displayed in the Log field.

- Click the Next to proceed

- Click the Finish to close the tool.
- The handset will take a few extra moments to boot up
for the first time.

The Jack will automatically
reboot when the update process has been completed. If your device
is turned on successfully, all downloading procedures are nearly
finished.

Step Five:
Performing A Full Reset
|
After the download has completed, it is recommended to perform
a command line reset. This is to ensure the memory is purged of
all irrelevant data.
- Once the handset has rebooted to the Today Screen, enter
the following code: *2767*3855#. The handset should display
a message “Formatting, Please Wait…”
- The phone will reboot after the Full Reset as this is normal
operation.

Step
Six: Verifying Software Version
|
After the full reset operation is completed, it is recommended
that the user verify the software version of the phone. Please power
off the handset and insert your SIM card. Power the handset back
on and see the below images.
- To check the software version, enter the following information
on the phone: *#1234#
- Both the PDA and Phone versions should show i637UCIJ2

- At this time, the update is free for Jack users.
- Is It Possible To Regress Back To
Windows Mobile 6.1 If I Do Not Like 6.5?
- Since original firmware with tool was never official
released by Samsung, this option does not exist.
- Will This Upgrade Work With Other
Samsung Mobile Handsets?
- This specific upgrade is on for the Samsung Jack for
AT&T. Any attempts to utilize this upgrade tool could
result in a failed flash, which could potentially void the
warranty.
- How Long Will The Upgrade Be Available
For My SGH-i637?
- Currently, there is no plan to remove the upgrade after
initial release.
- I Have Seen Other Windows Phone (Mobile) 6.5
And They Look Different. Why Is That?
- The Jack is running on a Windows Phone 6.5 Standard
Edition OS. The Standard edition will visually look different
because the Titanium overlay is not included. Titanium requires
touch screen hardware to become end user friendly. Most
Windows Phone 6.5 Professional Editions will usually have
Titanium.
- If I Purchase A New SGH-i637 (Jack),
Will It Come With Windows Phone (Mobile) 6.5?
- Yes. Windows Phone (Mobile) 6.5 will be rolled into current
production process.
- If I Have x64 bit Edition of Windows.
Will The Upgrade Tool Work On this OS
- Due to the nature of the drivers embedded with the tool,
they were not designed for use in that environment.
- Is The Upgrade Tool For My SGH-i637
(Jack) Compatible With Windows 7?
- No. At This time, it is recommended to execute tool
on x32 builds of Windows Vista or XP
- I Attempted The Upgrade And It Appears
My Handset Does Not Power On. What Can I Do?
- The tool changes the bootloader for upgrade process.
The handset may “remember” to be boot into download mode.
To clear the memory, remove the battery for about one minute
and then reinsert battery. The handset should now power
on as normal by pressing power button.
- I Have Completed The Upgrade And It
Appears My Handset Does Not Power On. What Can I Do?
- There is a slight change to the length of time to power
on the handset. Press & hold the power button for about
three seconds to turn the device on.
