How Do I Transfer MP3 Files To My SGH-A887 (Solstice) Phone?

The SGH-A887 (Solstice) phone features several different methods to transfer MP3 files both to and from the phone. Each are explained, in depth, further down the page.

SGH-A887 (Solstice) Media Transfer Methods

The phone provides the ability to playback MP3 files, assign them as a contact ringtone, alarm tone or as the incoming call ringtone. The music player supports the following audio file types: MP3, AAC, WMA, MP4, 3GP, MIDI and AMR.

Please Note: The Media Player does not necessarily support all features of a particular file format nor all the variations of those formats. The Media Player includes support for Digital Rights Management (DRM) which allows you to play some purchased or subscription content. These copyright protections may prevent some images, music (including ringtones) and other content from being copied, modified, transferred or forwarded.


Format

    To transfer MP3 files, from a PC via a memory card, requires that you have a Memory Card, Memory Card Adaptor & Memory Card Reader. The memory card must first be formatted, by the phone, in order for the phone to create the playable download folders (Audio & Music).

    Caution: The plug-in microSD memory card and its contents can be easily damaged by scratches or bending.  Use caution when inserting or removing the card and keep all memory cards out of reach of children.

    Important: Please note that the minimum size limit for the microSD memory card is 32MB. This phone does support the use of a microSDHC 16GB capacity memory card.  However, for optimal performance Samsung recommends using a card no larger than 2GB.

    Warning: Formatting a memory card will permanently delete all current content.

    To format a microSD memory card follow the steps below:

    1. Insert a microSD memory card into the memory card slot, located under the battery cover
    2. From the standby screen, press Menu
    3. Press Settings
    4. Press Memory Management
    5. Press Memory Card Details
    6. Press Format
    7. Press Yes to confirm formatting the microSD Memory Card

To transfer (Via a memory card) MP3 files, from a PC, to the Samsung phone follow the steps below:

    In order to use this option, the microSD memory card must be formatted by the phone to create the necessary folders. For instructions on how to format a microSD memory card, click here. Please note that the minimum size limit for the microSD memory card is 32MB. This handset does support the use of a microSDHC 16GB capacity memory card.  However, for optimal performance Samsung recommends using a card no larger than 2GB.

    Note: Audio files less than 300 KB are treated as ringtones, whereas audio files which are greater than 300 KB are stored in the Music Folder. You can not set an MP3 file as a ringtone if it is larger than 300 KB.

    On the PC

    1. Insert the microSD memory card into the memory card adaptor
    2. Insert the memory card adaptor into the memory card reader
    3. Connect the memory card reader to the PC’s USB port
    4. Copy desired MP3 files from the PC hard drive
    5. Paste the MP3 files into the microSD memory card's Music or Tones folder
    6. Remove the microSD memory card from the memory card adaptor

    On the Samsung phone

    1. While in standby mode, insert the microSD memory card into the memory card slot, located under the battery cover
    2. Press Menu
    3. Press My Stuff
    4. Press the drop down arrow then press Memory Card
    5. Press Audio
    6. Press either the Music or Tones folder
    7. Press Manage
    8. Press either Move or Copy
    9. Press on each MP3 file to check their boxes or press All to check all boxes
    10. Press either Move or Copy
    11. Press Phone
    12. Press the Audio folder
    13. Press either the Tones or Music folder
    14. Press Paste Here to Move or Copy the MP3 file(s) to the handset

    To transfer MP3 files from the phone to a PC follow the instructions for copying pictures/videos to a memory card, substituting MP3 file, audio and music for picures/videos, click here for instructions.

To transfer MP3 files, Via Bluetooth, from another phone to the Samsung phone follow the steps below:

    Note: Audio files less than 300 KB are treated as ringtones, whereas audio files which are greater than 300 KB are stored in the Music Folder. You cannot set an MP3 file as a ringtone if it is larger than 300 KB.

    On the Samsung phone

    1. Turn Bluetooth On (For instructions click here)
    2. Set the phone’s Bluetooth visibility to On (For instructions click here)

    On the phone with MP3 files

    1. While in standby mode, activate Bluetooth by turning it On
    2. Search for new Bluetooth devices
    3. Press the phone name (SGH-A887)
    4. Exchange the PIN Codes on both devices to pair the phones (the default code is “0000”)
    5. Browse for desired MP3 file(s)
    6. Transfer data from phone to phone

    On the Samsung phone

    1. Accept exchanging data

To transfer MP3 files From a PC, via a Bluetooth adaptor, to the Samsung phone follow the steps below:

    Note: Audio files less than 300 KB are treated as ringtones, whereas audio files which are greater than 300 KB are stored in the Music Folder. You cannot set an MP3 file as a ringtone if it is larger than 300 KB.

    On the Samsung phone

    1. While in standby mode, turn Bluetooth On  (For instructions click here)
    2. Change the phone’s Bluetooth visibility to On  (For instructions click here)

    On the PC

    1. Connect the Bluetooth adaptor to the PC’s USB port
    2. Search for Bluetooth devices
    3. Select the SGH-A887 to pair with the PC
    4. Exchange PIN code(s) on both the PC & phone to pair devices (default pass code is “0000”)
    5. Using Windows explorer, locate desired MP3 file
    6. Right click on the MP3 file
    7. Select send to Bluetooth then select the phone

    On the Samsung phone

    1. Accept incoming data from the PC

Via the New Samsung PC Studio

    WARNING: DO NOT DISCONNECT USB CABLE DURING THE FILE TRANSFER

    Important!: The Bluetooth feature must first be disabled before initiating a USB connection with the handset, click here for instructions. Prior to connecting the USB cable to the handset, install the latest version of the Samsung PC Studio application. This application installs the necessary USB drivers onto your PC. For a free download of PC Studio, go to http://www.samsung.com/us/support.

    To transfer MP3 files, using the New Samsung PC Studio & a USB cable, to a PC follow the steps below:

    1. From the standby screen, insure that the USB mode setting is set to either PC Studio or Ask on Connection
      • For instructions on changing the USB mode setting, click here.
    1. Connect the USB cable to both the phone's Power/Accessory Interface connector & the PC's USB slot
      • When successfully connected, the phone will show the connected icon  on the top of the display

    1. If prompted, Select the PC Studio USB setting
    2. The New Samsung PC Studio program will automatically appear on the PC
    3. Click on the SGH-A887 icon, located in the upper right corner, to open a box showing the handset's internal memory
    4. Double click on the Audio folder then double click on the Music folder
    5. Click on the My Computer icon, located in the upper left corner, to open a box showing the PC's  internal memory
    6. Navigate to the PC's MP3 file location, or desired destination
    7. Drag and Drop or Copy (or Cut) and Paste the MP3 files between the My Computer box and the SGH-A887 box or vice versa
    8. After the successful transfer of the MP3 file(s), click on OK in the Device Explorer or My Computer box
    9. Now it is safe to disconnect the USB data cable from both the handset & PC

    WARNING: DO NOT DISCONNECT USB CABLE DURING THE MP3 FILE TRANSFER

    Hints & Tips:

    • Make sure the USB data cable is compatible with your phone model. You can always check for the correct data cable by looking at the model number on http://www.samsungwireless.com in your phone's accessories section.
    • Remember to select file formats and file sizes supported by the phone when uploading files to the phone from the PC.

Mass Storage

    The handset's mass storage feature allows the transfer of MP3 files directly from a PC to the microSD memory card, inserted in the phone. In order to use this option, the microSD memory card must be formatted by the phone to create the necessary folders. For instructions on how to format a microSD memory card, click here.

    Please Note: The minimum size limit for the microSD memory card is 32MB. This phone does support the use of a microSDHC 16GB capacity memory card.  However, for optimal performance Samsung recommends using a card no larger than 2GB.

    Note: If the Bluetooth feature is currently active on the phone, USB communication will not be available. To transfer files to your phone, turn off the Bluetooth functionality or click here for instructions.

    WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT USB CABLE DURING THE MP3 FILE TRANSFER

    To transfer MP3 files, using the Mass Storage option, follow the steps below:

    1. Insert a formatted memory card into the memory card slot, located under the battery cover
    2. From the standby screen, insure that the USB mode setting is set to either Mass Storage or Ask on Connection
      • For instructions on changing the USB mode setting, click here.
    1. Connect the USB cable to both the phone's Power/Accessory Interface connector & the PC's USB slot
      • When successfully connected, the phone will show the connected icon  on the top of the display

    1. If prompted, Select the Mass Storage USB setting
    2. If prompted, click "Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer" on the new Removable Disk screen or open Windows Explorer manually
    1. Navigate to the MP3 file location on the PC
    2. Drag n Drop or copy & paste the MP3 file into into the phone's Music or Tones folders, located within the Audio folder, on the handset

Windows Media™ Player

    The Windows Media™ Player Sync Music option allows the transfer of music files directly from a PC to the microSD memory card, located in the phone. Before connecting the phone & PC, the microSD memory card must be formatted by the phone to create the necessary folders. For instructions on how to format a microSD memory card, click here.

    Note: The minimum size limit for the microSD memory card is 32MB. This phone does support the use of a microSDHC 16GB capacity memory card.  However, for optimal performance Samsung recommends using a card no larger than 2GB.

    In order to use the Sync Music option, the PC must be loaded with Windows Media Player 10 or higher. To download Windows Media Player 10 or higher visit the following website: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ . Note: If the Bluetooth feature is currently active on the phone, USB communication will not be available. To transfer files to your phone, turn off the Bluetooth functionality or click here for instructions.

    To transfer MP3 files, using the Windows Media Player Sync Music option, follow the steps below:

    1. From the standby screen, insure that the USB mode setting is set to either Media Player or Ask on Connection
      • For instructions on changing the USB mode setting, click here.
    1. Connect the USB cable to both the phone's Power/Accessory Interface connector & the PC's USB slot
      • When successfully connected, the phone will show the connected icon  on the top of the display

    1. If prompted, select the Media Player USB setting
    1. Open Windows Media Player 10 or higher then click on the Sync tab
    2. From the Windows Media Player application Sync tab, ensure that the SGH-A887 device displays in the upper-right corner of the screen. If not, click on Next device until the SGH-A887 appears.
    3. Click on the Library plus sign (+) then click on Songs to display a list
    4. Drag or Add the MP3 file(s) from the library to the Sync List or playlist
    5. Select Start Sync to transfer the MP3 file(s) to the handset memory
    6. After the file transfer is completed it will be safe to remove the USB data cable from both the handset & PC

    MP3 files can also be Downloaded through Shop Tones, a service offered through the AT&T network. Shop Tones is a paid subscription service offered through AT&T.
